Matt and Tribeca Therapy are excited to announce the launch of Tribeca Maternity, a new branch of the group therapy practice offering online therapy for women, their partners, and their families. Not a separate practice from Tribeca Therapy, Tribeca Maternity was founded, with Tribeca Therapy’s Rachael Benjamin serving as its Director, in order to pay necessary and specialized attention to addressing the emotional experiences related to family planning, trying to conceive, pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood.
Although Tribeca Therapy dedicated resources toward creating Tribeca Maternity in 2019, its launch was expedited in response to the incredible impact the COVID-19 crisis has had on trying, expecting, and new parents’ lives and relationships. In our teletherapy and online therapy sessions, we witnessed firsthand how the needs of women, their partners, and their families have both grown and shifted in these uncertain and unprecedented times. As individuals, couples, and families confront overcrowded, overtaxed medical systems, stalled fertility services, delayed adoption and surrogacy processes, and the general stress of living during a pandemic, we realized the critical importance of providing remote help and emotional support now.
Matt and Tribeca Therapy have provided therapy related to trying to conceive, family planning, infertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenting since its founding in 2009. Joining the group practice in 2012, Rachael Benjamin has pioneered this focus within the practice as a specialist and leader in maternity and women’s health, supervising and training other therapists in the field. With Rachael’s firsthand recognition of the limitations of most of the help women, their partners, and their families are offered, Tribeca Maternity not only strives to get close to patients’ current experiences with maternity, but also to understand the rest of their histories, lives, and relationships, which have continued effect on their emotional lives.
Treating a wide range of individuals, couples, and families, including LGBTQ+, interracial, multicultural, interreligious, and non-traditional families, at Tribeca Therapy, we understand the language of maternity and the designation of women, their partners, and their families are limiting. We decided on the name Tribeca Maternity after extended consideration about the lack of inclusive language around this time in people’s lives. We also recognize that trans, gender-nonconforming, nonbinary people, and cisgender men are parents too (Read more about Tribeca Maternity’s use of language here).
In conjunction with the launch of Tribeca Maternity, Tribeca Therapy has also produced a new division of our website with extensive and dedicated focus to the myriad needs of women, their partners, and their families. Understanding these needs often get less attention than they deserve, Tribeca Maternity aims to speak directly to women’s experiences of maternity in all its complexities during COVID-19 and how we help, including postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, infertility, feeding decisions and adjustments, navigating doctors and other providers, and more.
